Orange Bikes demo day…suits you, Sir.

February 06 2011

The Bike Treks demo is always a favourite, a well organised shop with great stock set in the very heart of the Lake District. Rolling out of Town on the first demo loop and it quickly becomes apparent that it won't be a quick car park bounce. Straight up and into the hills, the Lakeland peaks look ominously down. The group string out as the lightweights fly ahead and the granny ring spinners winch their way up; Five Ten rubber sticking to pedal or track depending on their ability to keep turning. At the top the roles are reversed and the terrain sweeps back down the fell, the long-travel bikes picking up speed and leaving the others to negotiate terrain accurately while they straight line every bump and rock garden. Suspension finds traction wherever the rider points it, but as they all regroup at the bottom, each approach to riding has brought similar smiles...

Nige Pilling taking the straight line option...rather quickly.

Bikes suitably tasted, the next climb is an opportunity to wax lyrical on the perils of "that loose corner" or the merits of a ProPedal equipped air shock versus the traction giving coil of a Cane Creek Double Barrel. It's also a time to get an idea of what everyone around you rides, whether it's tips on equipment, routes, technique or just an opportunity to banter about the guy getting in the way on that last rock section. This weekend Adam Proctor and Nige were on hand, Adam the rep for Orange Bikes and Nige his suitably hard riding and knowledgable mate, often along for the ride. Being able to pick their brains is the best idea to getting an impression of what suits you: The bike with the build kit you need for the riding you do, all things angles, suspension, drivetrain and in Adam's case, colour-coordination...

Adam Proctor is all things Orange Mountain Bikes, anything you need to know about black, white and purple...

The last descent is always the most important on any ride, finishing on a high is a definite advantage. Loughrigg Terrace suits just fine, a sweeping blast above the Lake as you carve the gravel, jump the rocks and taunt the rider ahead of you, coaxing each other to take just a little bit more risk as you over cook the final slaty corner beneath the cave. A great end to one of the best test loops any shop can offer.

Orange Mountain Bikes demo Bike Treks

By the last descent everyone's well attuned to their bikes, a final opportunity to push it hard...

The ride back into town is a short spin to temper any excess adrenalin from the final descent, another opportunity to talk tech and a great way to share your experiences and learn a little more about the other bikes. Pulling back into the bike shop entrance, it's more importantly time for a brew...

Cup of tea Orange Mountain Bikes

A post-ride brew, oh so civilised...

So, the moral of the story in all of this? Demo days are a fantastic opportunity to get out not only to test the latest and greatest in all things Orange Mountain Bikes, but also a suitable forum to ask any product related questions from knowledgable staff, get pointers on setup, and have a jolly good time.

Thank you to Adam and Nige for their hard work, Bike Treks for organising another great demo in Ambleside, and Michael Bonney for getting out of bed on a  weekend and taking his toys to shoot a few photographic nuggets. If you're looking to test an Orange demo bike, please visit our events and demos page, it'd be churlish not to...

And remember, if you can't make it to a shop organised demo, or you're too late to ride the bike you really wanted, any Orange Bikes dealer can access the demo fleet and order one into store. Most importantly, the bike shop or our own staff are the people you need to talk to when deciding which bike best fits the way you ride...suits you, Sir.
